River Run Guide Monster Brazos Smallie

Texans like to say “everything is bigger in Texas” and for those fishermen fishing on the Brazos River this is certainly true concerning the size of the smallmouth bass they are catching. Recently a monster smallmouth was recently snagged on the Brazos. This smallie measured 22 inches in length and weighed in slightly over 6 pounds. This Brazos River smallmouth fishing trip earned this lucky fisherman a new TPWD Catch and Release record with the catch of this huge female smallmouth. A Brazos River smallmouth fishing trip will provide smallmouth fanatics with crystal clear water full of trophy size bronzebacks. Easy to fish from shore or on a small boat this is a limited access stretch of water where catch and release is required. The Brazos River has been the subject of many articles in national magazines due not only the great smallmouth fishing, but also for the sizable largemouth and spotted bass populations.

Situated downstream of the Lake Whitney Dam, the river is divided into sections meant to be fished on a one or two day trip. When planning a trip to the river take this fact into your plans because once a section has been started there is no way out until you reach one of the limited access points. This might present problems for some who cannot tolerate heat and high humidity, but on the other hand this is what helps produce such a great fishery. All stretches are catch and release only.

As you work down the river fish will be found in deep holes during the high temperatures of summer and in the shallow stretches during spring and fall. One of the most amazing things about this fishery is how clear the water is. You can often see the bass many coming at your lure.  It is hard to appreciate water this clear and how exciting it is to fish under these conditions.

Another of the great factors that make this river so exciting to fish is the current levels produced by the dam. This current varies and produces very stout bass full of fight. What might feel like a five pound smallie on the end of your line is usually a two pounder. Imagine the fight of those fish over five pounds!
