Once again, we’ll take a brief trip around the country to look at the trends in the smallmouth fishing reports for July 6, 2012. I like to look at these national trends to help all the smallmouth anglers out there cope with and understand where, when and how to catch more bronzebacks!

Smallmouth Fishing Reports 7.6.2012

Western PA

Lake Erie: The smallmouth fishing started slowly from Presque Isle to North East, but it has picked up. While some anglers blamed the absence of winter ice at Presque Isle Bay for continuing muddy waters, nice smallmouths in the 18-24 inch range were reported. Source

Las Vegas

Lake Mead: Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are keeping anglers busy in the Overton Arm.

Lake Mohave: Largemouth and smallmouth bass action remains good in the morning and late afternoon. Source

North Carolina

French Broad River: This week the river has fished great even with record high temperatures, said fishing guide Chris Manderson. Avoid fishing at mid-day; smallmouth are more active mornings and evenings.

Santeetlah: Smallmouth bass are hitting Rattletrap lures and deep-running Rapala at depths of 8 to 10 feet off points. Source

Kansas

Wilson: largemouth, smallmouth bass good on minnows. Source

Southeastern Minnesota

Fish in the rivers in this area are taking on a summer pattern, and smallmouth bass have been the most likely to bite. Fish are not yet taking topwater baits, and weeds are beginning to hamper dropping baits. Water temperatures are approaching the mid-70s, and smallmouths are post-spawn and moving to their summer lairs. Source

The bronzebacks are moving deep in the lakes so you need to find them suspending. Lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits are good search baits for these fish.

In rivers, the bass can be anywhere on any given day and you need to work to find a pattern. Soft plastics are your friend this time of year.

The smallmouth fishing report for 7.6.2012 is just a snapshot of what is going on around the country. Let me know what you are seeing in your neck of the woods!
